In general, the following promotion status will be followed for all non-veteran initiated members:
- E-1: Recruit
- E-2: Upon graduation of Recruit Training.
- E-3: Two months time in grade as E-2. The member is responsible for the request for advancement up the appropriate Company Chain of Command.
NOTE: No time in grade waivers will be considered for E-3 and below
For advancements E-4 through E-6 a formal evaluation must be conducted by the Company staff (CO/XO/SEA) and submitted to the Council. The Company Command staff does not require Council approval to advance the member, but must wait at least 72 hours from the time the evaluation formally submitted to the Council prior to informing the member of advancement. This also applies, along with additional requirements outlined below, to advancements to O-1 or O-2.
E-4:
Three months time in grade as E-3 (Up to one month may be waived). Formal Performance Evaluation by Company Command staff submitted to the Council and successful completion of NCO course.
There is no time in grade specifically prescribed for veterans to advance to E-4. Military veteran members E-5 and E-6 may wear the rank insignia of the highest rank attained during their military service. They should endeavor to complete the certification process outlined below and will attend an [OgV] indoctrination course. Completion of the certification will be tracked and certification will be awarded.
E-5:
Four months time in grade as E-4. (Up to one month may be waived). Formal Performance Evaluation by Company Command staff submitted to the Council using the notification timing rules above.
E-6:
Six months time in grade as E-5. (Up to three months may be waived). Formal Performance evaluation by Company Command staff submitted to the Council using the notification timing rules above.
E-7 through E-9:
Reserved for [OgV] administrative and command positions and will be assigned by the Council. Military veteran members E-7 and E-9 may wear the rank insignia of the highest rank attained during their military service. They should endeavor to act according to their highest rank attained and will be asked to assist in [OgV] administration once they are comfortable.
O-1:
Must attain least an E-4, have a Formal Performance Evaluation by Company Command staff submitted to the Council and successfully complete the War College Officer Training Course.
O-2:
Six months time in grade as O-1. (Up to three months may be waived). Formal Performance Evaluation by Company Command staff submitted to the Council.
O-3 through O-6:
Reserved for [OgV] administrative and command positions and will be assigned by the Council. Additionally, there will be only one active O-6 assigned at any time.
O-7 through O-10:
Will only be used for ceremonial/official purposes requiring officers of flag rank.
W-1 through W-5:
May be awarded to members who have achieved at the rank of E-6 and have accepted additional duties or have a special technical skill.
W-3 will be the rank administratively assigned to all members of any official [OgV] competition team, with the exception of the CO who will normally be assigned the rank of 0-3 (unless actually assigned a higher [OgV] rank). These ranks are TEMPORARY and limited to duty within the competition team. This is to ensure that all members of the team are on even footing and may speak freely as equal rank.
If you identify rank with us – this is the wrong mind set. We are a combat unit and accordingly cap ourselves at a rank of O-6. This means, just as in the real military, that a bulk of the forces will be in the E-4 through E-6 (and O-1 through O-3) ranks. In general, your guide to where you fit within [OgV] should lie in your organizational position vice the rank you wear. Positional authority is more important than the number of stripes on your sleeve or the device on your collar.
